Data Transfer Procedure Via Modem

Modem Number:  949-453-9637

When you send files to I Source, this is referred to as "uploading." The three (3) steps involved in this process are outlined below.

  • Compress multiple files into a single file using the utility PKZIP (see below for compressing files).

  • Use your computer and telecommunication software to dial I Source and make a connection.

  • Upload your files.

1.0 Compressing files with PKZIP

What is PKZIP? PKZIP is a software utility program used to compress a file or multiple files into a single compressed file. You will find it easier to upload one file rather than several smaller files. Additionally, because the data is compressed, it will take a shorter amount of time to upload thus saving time and reducing your phone bill.

Where can I get PKZIP? You can get PKZIP by clicking the version below that is compatible with your computer and operating system and downloading the file and setting it up on your computer. Follow the software instructions to ZIP your files. This process will provide you with one compressed file and a faster download.

32-bit Windows version: ftp://i-source.com/pub/pk263wsp.exe
16-bit Windows version: ftp://i-source.com/pub/pk262w16.exe
DOS version: ftp://i-source.com/pub/pk250dos.exe

2.0 Connecting to I-Source's Computer

The next step is to dial I Source's computer with your computer and modem so you can upload your file. It is not possible to give exact instructions for this step because there are many different telecommunication programs. (eg. Procomm, Qmodem, Telix, etc.) Each of these programs use different keystrokes to accomplish various tasks. However, there are a few things to know.

I Source supports V.32 data transmission (28.8 kbps and slower) and is equipped with V.42 error control and V.42bis and MNP-5 data compression. You should set your modem to its highest speed (56 kbps max) and use 8 bits, 1 stop bit and no parity.

Most modems are Hayes compatible. The command to dial from a Hayes modem is ATD. When calling I Source, you would issue the command ATD19494539637.  (Assuming you are calling long distance. Otherwise, remove the 1949 from the dialing string).

If everything is correct, your modem should respond with a connect string and you should receive I Source's welcome screen. At the prompt, enter your name and company. Once you have entered your name and company, you are ready to upload.

3.0 Uploading files

From the command prompt, enter "U" to upload and press return. The host program will give you a list of protocols. Each protocol is simply a different format for sending data. The important thing is to choose a protocol that is supported by your telecommunications program. As a note, most programs support Xmodem. Once you have selected your protocol, I Source's computer will respond with the message "Ready to receive." You must now initiate the transfer process from your computer. The steps will differ depending on your communication software but generally you do the following:

Issue the command to upload a file Choose a protocol. (It must be the same one you chose on I Source's computer.) Enter the file you wish to upload.

If everything is set correctly, the file should be transmitted to I Source. If you encounter any problems or have any questions, please call: Chris or Irene at I Source. (949-453-1500)
